Charged with the opportunity to expand
a faceless one-story 600 square foot mini-house on a wonderful wooded
location, k.a conceived the project to appear in “reverse”.
Accordingly, the two-story 1500 square foot addition was to be understood
as though it was the larger Main House while the smaller existing
house was to be seen as the “addition”, due to its tiny
size and scale. Spatially, the new actual addition interjects a
grand two-story, light-filled Living Hall with loft which energizes
the entire composition and adds much needed accommodations for the
owners. The existing house was re-programmed and given over entirely
to bedrooms. With its crisp proportions, tight clapboard skin, and
metal roof the design evokes the simple farm buildings found in
this area of the Ulster County.
The project was designed for durability and to be constructed as inexpensively
as possible. Panelized modules were prefabricated by a local barn
builder and trucked to the site where they were craned into place
and connected. The entire shell and roof were completed in three consecutive
days.
