Manor House
Harrison, NY
New Construction

Designed as a spec house of 7,000 square feet for a developer (which
sold during construction), the design re-interprets the grand tradition
of American Shingle Style Architecture for today’s lifestyle.
The house thoughtfully engages its wooded setting of rolling topography
through the use of a flared cedar skin, ample stone walling, bluestone
terraces, and the protection of existing trees.
Occupying a commanding position on its site the house claims picturesque
views in all directions. The distinctive character of the house varies
from the formal approach side to the more intimate backyard areas
which are organized along a bluestone terrace extending to the pool.
The family room was conceived to feel lodge-like, and given a distinctive
hipped roof with overhangs, and eyebrow dormers. To further reinforce
the sense of separation, the family room enjoys a breezy, angular
relationship to the Main House.
On the interior, a linear vista was created from the kitchen hearth
area through the octagonal breakfast room, and into the family room
where it is anchored by a massive stone fireplace. On the exterior,
detailed manipulations of building form serve to create the impression
that the house is not new but has evolved over time. |
